How many cartons of Hicey ice cream fit in a 40-foot reefer container?

2026-10-26

About 5,000 cartons in a 40-foot high-cube reefer is the typical figure. However, it is not a fixed value. Carton formats vary across our product lines, and a reefer container provides less usable internal volume than a dry box of the same nominal size due to airflow channels and refrigeration units. We calculate the exact load based on your specific mix.

Why carton size changes the total container load

Ice cream carton dimensions depend directly on the product specification and packaging style. For instance, standard carton formats include 75g × 12 pieces per box, 85g × 12 boxes per case, or larger mixed-packing configurations. Because 3D fruit-shaped ice cream pieces and unique packaging molds occupy different volumetric footprints, the exact box count per 40HQ reefer shifts depending on your selected SKU assortment.

How reefer container design impacts usable space

A 40-foot high-cube reefer container (40HQ reefer) is the industry standard for ocean-freight frozen food delivery. While its external dimensions match dry freight containers, the internal space is reduced by floor T-grating, side air ducts, and the evaporator unit at the front. Maintaining proper air circulation at -20°C or lower requires clearance space around the pallets and carton stacks. Therefore, simple mathematical volume division tends to overestimate the actual loaded carton count.
